What is Low Vision?

Low vision is a condition that affects people’s visual acuity, reducing it to less than 30%. It is estimated that this problem affects more than two million people in Spain.

This limitation is mainly caused by different conditions, usually associated with age, such as cataracts, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, retinitis pigmentosa, aniridia, etc.

Symptoms of Low Vision

When a person cannot perform important tasks such as reading, writing or watching television with their usual glasses, this may be a case of low vision.

The visual field is the section of reality that the eye captures each time it scans its surroundings. The human visual field covers approximately 180º. If the visual field is less than 20º, the person is considered to have low vision.

Causes of Low Vision

Low vision is largely caused by diseases that affect the ocular system, although it can also be due to other causes such as accidents, injuries, infections, etc. Below are the main conditions that can lead to low vision:

Low Vision Treatment

Low vision cannot be corrected with glasses or contact lenses, but there are specific aids that allow people to maintain as normal a life as possible.

Low vision aids

Optical Aids: Optical visual aids are distinguished from normal corrective lenses, either by being a special selective filter with a minimum of absorption or by being a microscope or telescope to take better advantage of the rest of the visual or even a telelupa or electronic visual aid for patients with severe low vision.
