Since no visual aid is needed during the day, orthokeratology becomes an ideal system for:
- People who have problems using glasses or contact lenses in a conventional use regimen
- Athletes (for all types of sports)
- People whose profession requires seeing well without any correction ( police officers, firefighters, civil servants , etc.)
- Children , as a control of myopia, the progression of myopia can be reduced.
It is a lens for orthokeratology treatment that is specially designed for each individual patient and has CE marking. For the initial test, a new lens is manufactured.
The system consists of taking a three-dimensional photograph of the cornea (corneal topography) using a high-precision instrument (corneal topographer) and computer software, specially designed for this treatment, with which the most suitable lens for each individual is calculated and designed , ordering the detailed manufacture of this lens to the laboratory, which is responsible for manufacturing it using the latest technology.
This type of lens is made from materials with hyperpermeability to gas , which makes them highly safe to sleep with thanks to the high oxygen flow through the material itself. Due to the specific geometry of the posterior surface of the lens, the cornea will be modified during the night , so that after a few days it will not be necessary to use any means of optical compensation. As with any ortho-k contact lens , the effect of the contact lens is reversible and temporary.
This means that the lenses must be worn continuously every night to maintain the effects of the treatment. Therefore, the quality of vision will depend on the use of the contact lenses. If the results are considered to be unacceptable, either the use of the lens is suspended or discontinued, the cornea returns to its initial state and it will be possible to use a conventional soft or permeable lens after the treatment.
The duration of treatment with ortho-k contact lenses is one year since the lenses are replaced annually, during which time they should be renewed and the effects of the treatment checked.
There is no exact age to begin treatment. Children who are still growing and have problems with myopia, as well as adults of any age, can begin orthokeratology.
To properly wear night orthokeratology contact lenses, it is essential that you strictly follow the recommendations made by your contact lens specialist and that you comply with the following schedule of visits:
First consultation (Information and preliminary study)
It includes information on the treatment and prior examinations necessary for the optometric evaluation and ocular health to proceed with the adaptation; corneal topography and lens calculation.
Second consultation
Initial fitting of lenses specially made for this case. Subsequently, ocular, visual and topographic evaluation of the cornea. If everything is correct, this visit includes teaching, handling and maintenance of the lenses.
Third consultation
The next morning after having slept for a night with the lenses. During this visit, a complete evaluation of the ocular, visual and topographical state will be carried out and it will be decided whether any changes or modifications to the lenses are necessary in order to improve any aspect that is considered necessary.
Other consultations (control reviews)
Check-ups at certain intervals until you are approved for adaptation. Once you have been approved, you are advised to go for a check-up every six months.
Finally, it is advisable to replace the lenses one year after starting to use them, due to possible deposits that may be present, since this could cause a regression of the refractive defect, as a consequence of the deterioration of the same.
Adaptation takes approximately one week . During this week we will carry out a couple of check-ups and after seven days you will have 100% visual acuity , so you will not need to wear contact lenses or glasses during the day.
